About Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a research-based therapeutic approach that helps children express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play—their natural form of communication. Just as adults use words to process emotions and solve problems, children often use play to explore their inner world and make sense of what’s happening around them.

In Play Therapy, a trained therapist creates a safe, supportive environment where children can engage with toys, art materials, storytelling, or role-playing to work through challenges such as anxiety, trauma, grief, behavioral issues, or family transitions. The therapist observes and gently guides the child’s play to gain insight, build trust, and promote emotional growth and healing.

Play Therapy is especially effective for children ages 3 to 12, but its principles can be adapted for older children and even teens. It is grounded in the understanding that play is not just “fun,” but a powerful medium for learning, expression, and relationship-building.

At MendWell Counseling, Play Therapy is used to help children process difficult experiences, improve emotional regulation, strengthen communication skills, and develop confidence in a way that feels natural and empowering.
